GIS Interns
About the job:
The CSIR Smart Mobility Cluster is seeking two motivated GIS Interns to support the development, maintenance, and governance of strategic geospatial infrastructure that underpins transport planning, mobility research, spatial analytics, and decision-support activities.
The successful candidates will gain practical experience in GIS data management, spatial analysis in transport, metadata development, data quality assurance, and geospatial data governance while working alongside experienced researchers and GIS professionals.
This position reports to the Research Group Leader.

Key responsibilities:
Support the inventory, acquisition, organisation, and maintenance of GIS datasets.
Assist with spatial data cleaning, validation, topology correction, and quality assurance.
Develop and maintain metadata and dataset documentation.
Assist with transport network data management, including roads, public transport routes, and supporting spatial datasets.
Support geodatabase management and version control activities.
Contribute to data standardisation and GIS governance initiatives.
Assist with the preparation of maps, reports, and technical documentation.
Participate in stakeholder engagements and data collection activities where required.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
A Bachelor of Science degree in GIS/Geoinformatics/Remote Sensing, or a related field;
A postgraduate degree will be advantageous;
Must have knowledge of GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro, and/or QGIS;
Basic understanding of spatial data management and mapping principles;
Good analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills;
Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
