NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (MAHIKENG CAMPUS) FACULTY OF NATURAL AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS & DSTI-NRF SARChI (IK-Medplants4HAC) POSITION NUMBER: TBF0356 POSITION: INTERN (PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT) EMPLOYMENT TYPE: TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT
To assist with product development from plants for on-going joint project with DSTI-NRF SARChI Chair in IKMedplants4HAC and Agricultural Research Council (ARC).KEY
RESPONSIBILITIES:1.
Develop and optimize product formulations:
- Develop new food products.
- Optimize formulations.
- Evaluate ingredients.
- Improve existing products based on the project requirements.2. Conduct laboratory testing and product evaluation:
- Conducting laboratory investigation related to plant-based products.3. Quality assurance and food safety compliance:
- Ensure the quality of ready-to-eat products, raw materials, and equipment from the product development stage through scale-up trials to customer production, while providing technical support throughout the process
4.
Laboratory and equipment management:
- Maintain laboratory equipment; manage consumables and ingredients; ensure laboratory cleanliness and compliance with safety procedures.5.
Ethnobotanical survey:
- Assist post graduate students with data collection on ethnobotanical surveys for plants used for humans, animal and crop health.
§ A National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Food technology (Food and beverage production).§ A minimum of one (1) year hands on
experience
in product development.ADDED ADVANTAGES:§ Accreditation with the South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST).§ A minimum of one (1) year
experience
as a Laboratory technician.KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL
COMPETENCIES:§ Food Technology.§ Understanding of HACCP, GMP and food safety regulations.§ New product development concept.§ Evaluate new technologies for food products.BEHAVIOURAL
COMPETENCIES:§ Good work ethic§ Analytical thinking§ Meeting deadlines§ PunctualityREMUNERATION:The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
